In our latest safety focus we are asking our apprentices to Take 5 for Safety

The Take 5 is a useful personal pre-task risk assessment that allows workers to discuss the work they are undertaking with their colleagues and to identify and control hazards before starting a work task.

Our Hazard Helper Tool can also assist in discussing and identifying hazards in the workplace so that an organisation can begin the risk management process. Hazards identified should be eliminated if possible. If not possible, the risk to health and safety should be minimised.

What are the five steps of the Take 5?

1. STOP – Step back and take time to observe the tools, equipment, and work area.
2. CHECK AND DISCUSS – Think about what you need to do the task, and whether you have these resources. This could include protective gear, equipment, training, or licences.
3. ASSESS – Identify hazards by thinking about how you or another person could be injured during this task. For example, cuts from sharp edges, burns from heat, or trips from a cluttered work area. Identify the hazards involved, think about how likely an injury would be, and the consequence of this potential injury (minor, moderate, severe).
4. FIX – Use control measures, from the hierarchy of control, to eliminate or reduce the risk of injury. Discuss these controls with your supervisor.
5. GO – If the risk is appropriately reduced, follow the plan prepared and proceed to work safely. Make sure to reevaluate hazards and risks regularly.

Over the next 8 weeks our apprentices and trainees will receive training on Take 5 and be encouraged to complete a Take 5 within their workplaces. To encourage participation, we’re offering five $200 gift cards as prizes. Prioritising safety has never been more rewarding!

In order for an entry to be considered valid apprentices must;

📌 Complete the Take 5 Training module (sent to all apprentices and trainees via email)
📌 Submit a completed Take 5 by 8/04/2025
