"The Australian Industry Group (Ai Group) welcomes the COVID-19 Vaccination Claim Scheme that the Government has announced. The Scheme will provide more protection to Australians who experience moderate to significant adverse reactions from a COVID-19 vaccination. It will also assist in protecting employers from claims by employees in such circumstances," Innes Willox Chief Executive of the national employer association Ai Group said today.
"Serious adverse reactions are very rare but employer concerns about their potential liability have been a barrier to employers doing more to encourage their employees to be vaccinated.
"The announcement of the Scheme responds to calls by Ai Group and other industry groups for the Government to implement an indemnity for employers who encourage their employees to be vaccinated or who mandate vaccinations.
"If an employee experiences a serious adverse reaction to a COVID-19 vaccination, the employee is likely to pursue a claim under the Government’s Claim Scheme rather than against their employer. This will be welcomed by employers who have been very concerned about their liability in this area," Mr Willox said.
