• The Fair Work Commission (Commission or FWC) has commenced an urgent conferencing process in response to a request from parties including the Transport Workers' Union for it to urgently facilitate discussions amongst a wide range of stakeholders in the road transport sector and organisations that rely on its services, in relation to measures to assist road transport businesses, owner drivers and gig sector workers with a view to addressing recent fuel cost increases.
  • The Government introduced the Fair Work Amendment (Fairer Fuel) Bill 2026 (the Bill) into Parliament on 26 March 2026, in response to challenges related to fuel supply and rapid price rises.
  • The Bill would enable the Minister to determine that an application for a ‘road transport contractual chain order’ (RTCCO) is an “emergency application” and allow the Commission to make a RTCCO arising from such an application in an expedited manner. Such an order can impose obligations on both road transport businesses and parties to road transport contracts (i.e. organisations that utilise the services of the road transport industry).
