Australian manufacturers operate in an increasingly volatile global trading environment characterised by rising protectionism, trade diversion, and sophisticated circumvention strategies. Without a robust, fair and responsive trade remedies system, Australian industry cannot compete on a level playing field.
Australian Industry Group responds to the Department of Industry, Science and Resources' consultation paper with practical, implementation-focused recommendations to strengthen Australia's trade remedies framework. Our recommendations are based on consultations with member companies that actively engage with current trade practices and have firsthand experience of the system's limitations.
We also draw on international best practice from the European Union, United States and World Trade Organisation to ensure Australia's framework remains world-class and WTO-consistent.
While we acknowledge recent operational improvements by the Anti-Dumping Commission, legislative reform is now essential. The recommendations that follow address a few priority areas: accelerating agreed reforms, closing loopholes, improving accessibility for SMEs, and modernising enforcement mechanisms. Together, they
provide a pathway to a trade remedies system that protects Australian jobs and investment while maintaining procedural fairness and international credibility.
