It is standard for the hiring manager and/or HR to have the main interactions with a new employee, particularly when the business is medium to large. Whilst this is appropriate and expected, it is important that organisations consider the value of the CEO or a senior leader reaching out to a new employee before they start. One of the biggest things that disengages new employees is the culture and leadership of the organisation, so it is very important that the business sets the tone prior to day one.
HR can provide a ‘template’ email such as this Sample: Welcome Email to New Employee from the CEO or Senior Leader to the leader or CEO and encourage them to tweak it to suit their style and preference.
It is recommended that it is positioned to the CEO as a key culture and people strategy to set the tone for their leadership. It is a no cost/ low time investment strategy that is well received by the new starter as they are usually surprised and pleased that the senior person has taken the time to do it. It is also recommended that this is done after the hiring manager email. The CEO may also choose to send some other relevant information with their email such as information on the organisation’s goals.
