Australia’s skills and workforce challenges are becoming increasingly complex. Skills needs are changing and the traditional divide between vocational education and training (VET) and higher education no longer reflects the realities of modern industries, workplaces and careers.
Australian Industry Group has long advocated for a more connected and coherent tertiary education system. It has been encouraging to see increasing policy focus on tertiary harmonisation, with governments, regulators and education and training providers all taking important steps towards strengthening pathways, improving credit recognition and reducing barriers between VET and higher education.
While much of this reform has occurred at the system-level, it has direct implications for employers and industry. A more harmonised tertiary system can help employers address workforce shortages, lift productivity and respond more effectively to changing skill demands. It can also make it easier for people to access the skills they need throughout their working lives, aligned with labour market needs.
