Australian Industry Group today released a landmark report showcasing how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is helping Australian businesses tackle the nation's productivity challenge.

Australia's productivity growth has been declining for a decade and has hovered near zero since the pandemic and insufficient investment in new technologies is a key factor. Australian Industry Group's analysis shows AI offers a critical opportunity to reverse this trend and empower industry for a better Australia.

"AI isn't a distant concept – it's here, reshaping how businesses operate, innovate, and care for their people," said Innes Willox, Chief Executive of the national employer association. "From streamlining supply chains to boosting workplace safety, AI is unlocking new levels of productivity and resilience. But with great power comes great responsibility – and Australian companies are showing how to adopt AI thoughtfully, ethically, and in partnership with their people."

The new report, developed in collaboration with the National AI Centre, features case studies from six leading companies successfully implementing AI:

  • Blackmores uses AI-generated feedback to improve worker posture and reduce injuries.
  • George Weston Foods (GWF) leverages AI to forecast orders and make training accessible for staff with English as a second language.
  • InfraBuild automates steel bundle tagging for safer, more reliable operations.
  • ANCA achieves 99% accuracy in product manual translations using AI.
  • Dux deploys an AI voice agent to enhance customer support outside business hours.
  • ISS Health Services integrates AI to monitor food waste, freeing staff for critical tasks.

These examples show AI as a tool to support, not replace human expertise, reducing physical strain and enhancing machine reliability while improving safety and inclusivity.

Key insights from the report:

  • AI makes workplaces safer and more accessible.
  • AI enhances human capability and problem solving.
  • AI adoption succeeds when driven from the top – leadership ensures alignment, governance, and effective change management.

Alongside this, Australian Industry Group strongly supports the Productivity Commission's recent conclusion that regulation should focus on behaviours, not technology.

"Regulate the behaviours, not the technology is a welcome conclusion from the Productivity Commission's Five Pillars report," Mr Willox said. "Many of the behaviours cited as risks of AI – misinformation, discrimination, unfair practices – are already regulated under existing laws. Whether you're using a fax machine or AI tools, misrepresenting your products and services is prohibited."
